Perros Indalo, a show of work by Juan Perdiguero opens at Ghostprint Gallery on Thursday, May 3 with an artist’s preview reception from 6–8 pm. The exhibition continues on First Friday, May 4 from 6-9 p.m. and remains on view through May 26.

Perros Indalo refers to the stray and watch dogs observed by Perdiguero in Almeria, Spain where he was participating in an international artists residency. The Indalo is a ghost of regional legend and is represented by a prehistoric magical symbol painted on the buildings to protect them from evil.
In these works the artist explores on the psychological level the ambiguous line where “the human and the animal meet”.Technically they are also a hybrid as Perdiguero fuses and manipulates the borders between photography and drawing.The backgrounds are photo representations of the native vegetation of the Almeria region while the dogs are drawn in etching ink, their rendering inspired by Western classical portraiture.
Perdiguero states: “ These canine renderings explore the “animality”, the state of being an animal we all carry in our existential nature……. they are metaphorical portraits of the human condition.”

George Pratt is a distinguished painter, graphic novelist, and filmmaker. His first novel, “Enemy Ace: War Idyll,” has been translated into 9 languages and won awards for Best Foreign Graphic Novel in both England and France. His documentary film, “See You in Hell, Blind Boy,” researches his travels through the Mississippi Delta for his novel of the same name.  

 Pratt’s work is in private collections in the United States, Canada, Europe, India, and Japan, and has been exhibited in the Houston Museum of Fine Art and many galleries throughout the world. George was honored to be included in Walt Reed’s book “The Illustrator in America 1860-2000.” He was also awarded a Gold Medal in the Spectrum Awards of 2002 and has had his work exhibited many times at the Society of Illustrators in New York. He continues to illustrate and design books and book jackets for various publishers, including: Random House, Henry Holt, Inc., Warner Books, Clarion Books, and Columbia Studios.    Pratt has taught at Pratt Institute, VCU and is currently teaching painting and drawing at Ringling College of Art and Design.

Body of Evidence is an exhibition of assemblage and photography by retired VCU art professor, Chuck Scalin. This show marks Scalin’s 25th solo exhibition in Richmond. His new body of work is based on an interest in popular culture and police procedurals as seen in film and television and Scalin invites the viewing audience to enter into the narrative he has created:

“You are invited to examine a number of recently discovered, long-forgotten boxes containing evidence for unsolved mysteries. Perhaps you will be able to uncover the meaning hidden in these enigmatic clues and unlock their dark puzzles.”

A group of dramatic black and white photographs of light within darkness will accompany the 14 assemblages along with a video by Megan McKissack.

The show opens at Ghostprint Gallery on Thursday, March 1st with a private reception from 6–8 pm. The exhibition continues on First Friday, March 2 from 6-9 p.m. and remains on view through March 31st.

Neal Iwan is a versatile artist and illustrator living and working in Richmond, VA. He is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Communication Arts program and of The Illustration Academy. Iwan’s work has appeared in Virginia Living, Richmond Magazine,CMYK and RVA.He has been honored by The Society of Illustrators of New York and L.A., the Richmond Illustrators Club and The Academy of Art College in San Francisco.

Iwan’s most recent paintings feature animals portrayed in his signature impressionistic style. Leslie Herman is originally from Delaware.His academic credentials include a BFA from the Department of Communication Arts at VCU, graduation from The Illustration Academy and the Career Mentor-ship Program with The Art Departmet which he completed in 2011.

Herman’s work was awarded a Gold Medal in the Society of Illustrators 54th annual in 2011. He executes a multitude of subjects from hip band posters to delicate portraits in a graphically sophisticated manner.
