Charity
Meese takes her inspiration for the totems from her time spent traveling with the nomads of south Morocco, the Tuaregs, people of the Rif and High Atlas mountains. The totems are named Grace, Charity, Justice, Trust, Mercy, Patience and Hope. She writes: “Totems emerge from scraps scavenged from thrift stores, torn up tatters of discarded clothing...Layered into iconic, tribal, primitive, beauty, they take on a new life, ceremonial, regal, dreamlike, ancient, tattered, and crumbled cosmic”. In a stream of consciousness Meese describes a Berber wedding ceremony: “the bride wears over a simple caftan layers of fabric in clashing colors that blend like flowers in a garden. A veil of red lace. A crown of tied rags. Layers patterns colors covering hair that is bound in scarves, braided yarns sequined, hiding the eyes or crowning the head”.
